Alston, the highest market town in Britain, is a 5 minute walk away and offers a good range of shops: chemist, butchers, bakery, Co-op (open until 10pm), art galleries, cafes, tea rooms and pubs. Nearby there is golfing and fishing, a little further north is Roman Wall country and to the south, the Lake District.
